Private or Public Water?

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

In the last newsletter our Councillor reported on discussions between Scottish Power (SP) and Scottish Water (SW) with a view to connecting the Garvie Burn private main at the top of the Glen with the public system at the Clachan.
Residents on the Garvie Burn supply recently received notification from Sam Anderson of SP stating that SW would be investigating the existing water main with a view to potentially adopt it.
Sam Anderson tells me that SW’s inspection is now completed and he awaits the final report. He explained that the water treatment plant had just completed routine maintenance and water sampling.
Will the Garvie Burn residents end up on the Scottish Water supply, will they remain as they are, or on a similar version of their current system? Watch this space!

Matched Funding

Thursday, July 13th, 2006

Dear Editor

Firstly, may I say how much I enjoy reading about the various happenings in the area, I’m sure I express the appreciation of many when I thank you for that.

However, the letter in the last issue has prompted me to res-pond. The Wind Farm Trust criteria of matched funding has been carefully thought out, and is there for good reason. Namely to sift out impractical ideas that would have no long lasting benefit to the community. Matched funding allows individuals with no vested interest or partiality, to cast a purely impersonal and analytical eye over the practicalities of any proposed project requiring more than £1,000. It would be a great pity if chunks of funding were to be used for the good of a very few, rather than put to much greater effect for the larger community.

While Ms. McLuckie mentions the £1000 limit on grants without matched funding, several local organisations have already benefited from multiple applications, including the Glendaruel & Colintraive News-letter. I would urge the Trustees to respect the criteria set down when the agreement was reached, these carefully considered conditions are a tried and tested way of ensuring that the money is not frittered away on some impractical or short-lived project.

Yours sincerely,

Moyra Creelman
